Wk 15 — UGA +7 vs LSU (ATL)

2019wk15

Not much to say this week.  I will link to this.  It’s a film breakdown of the Steelers game.  Remember how we used to hate the Colt McCoy Pat Shurmur checkdown era?  Be careful what you wish for.  Click that link and marvel at the peaceful, bucolic landscape surrounding Kareem Hunt in the middle of Heinz Field.  [eyeroll emoji.]

Good luck this week.

And if you haven’t paid your entry fee please do so.  I’m withholding weekly pay-outs from late/non-payers.  But it wouldn’t be cool if you pay after making the playoffs.  We’ve never dealt with that before but I should think you’d be DQ’d if not paid in full prior to the last week in the season.  Let’s not have it come to that.  Gracias.

Come for the skeeball, stay for the Time Crisis.

We looked at Wisco at Minny, we know Niners are playing at Baltimore, and everyone knows where they’ll be Sunday and what they’ll be watching Sunday afternoon.

But in the end, OSU at Ann Arbor is our all-play for this week featuring NH Seacoast’s finest piloting the Buckeyes.  Ryan Day is doing the improbable.  Following the Urban Meyer era with as much as or more impressive football on both sides of the ball was more that even the biggest Buckeye honk could have hoped for.  (Shit it took 25 years for Jim Tressel to get us to move on after Woody.)

300s

Fellow Playland alumnus and current owner of pre-eminent local dive bar* confirms Ryan Day was a good dude.

A fun fact that you won’t get anywhere else (unless The Athletic reads this):  Ryan Day’s summer job was here at Happy Hampton at the Playland Arcade.  Yeah, he was one of the guys who would collects your 10,000 skeeball tickets and award you your prize — likely a very nice pencil eraser, or perhaps a plastic slinky, or maybe even a low capacity squirt gun.  With regard to his current success, anyone around here could tell you, after you cut your teeth keeping a constant flow of tank top wearers from the Merrimack Valley in line for a couple seasons at Hampton Beach you’re uniquely well-equipped with the life lessons to propel you to success in any field of your choice.

Happy Handicapping.

*Not kidding about The Pier.  Absolutely the Official Cheddar Bay Viewing Outpost for all Browns games on basic cable in the Boston area.

Wk 13 — Packers +3 at Niners

Ohio -20.5 at BGSU
EMU +5 at NIU

Form linked above.  Lines here:  2019wk13

Congrats to CapGG for his weekly win last week.  Seven points got him ninety beans.  Noice.

We went with Packers/Niners because we’re fairly certain to be visiting the Buckeyes next week for the Michigan game.  Yes OSU/PSU is a biggie.

Wk 12 — Okla -10 at Baylor

EMU -16.5 at Akron (EMU)
WMU -1 at OU (WMU)

I’ll admit I was pushing for the Eagles/Pats game until I realized that that would be four Pats all-plays.  So Waco it is.  I haven’t been paying attention to Baylor and they have some remarkably unspectacular wins but there they are 9-0 and at home with a chance at the playoffs against the Sooners.  I’ll tune in to check it out.

Wk 11 — LSU +6.5 at Bama

2019wk11

607361708.jpg.0No brainer all-play this week with 2014’s Mr. Ohio on his long march to win a NCAA Championship though not with his home state Buckeyes.  Imagine sitting two years behind perpetually hyped but ultimately average JT Barrett only to be told you will also sit behind likewise hyped and average Dwayne Haskins.  I would’ve snapped for sure but Burrow sucked it up and competed and won the starting job at LSU.  All the credit to Burrow and not enough great things can happen for him.  (Oh wait, did I reveal my all-play lean?  Dang.)

WEEKLY PAYOUTS START THIS WEEK.  Based on our receipts, I am locking the weeklies at $90.

Wk 10 — Pats -3.5 at Ravens (SNF)

Team, I am throwing up my hands at the hosted website proposition.  For the rest of this year, we’re staying here with a URL that hasn’t been offline in probably over ten years.

“Miss me?”

Regarding the Browns:  everything should be fine now that the easy part of the schedule has arrived.  lol.  So firing Kitchens should’ve happened a month ago and the only thing that stopped it was not wanting to be embarrassed by the infinity hot-take shows on infinity sports media outlets.  Is Haslam’s pride more worth pissing away a year on the rookie contracts of Nick Chubb and Myles Garrett?  Worth more than watching Baker Mayfield transform into Colt McCoy under this coaching staff?  Answer is apparently yes.

No, firing this doofus is now a cold take.  The current take is that John Dorsey’s record does not withstand scrutiny and that his honeymoon is over.  What sealed it for me was reflecting that his best draft pick (Chubb) was rated behind Austin Corbett.  Given that Rashad Penny and Sony Michel were already drafted we’ll never know if Chubb was the guy he wanted or the guy who was left… but he was probably just the guy who was left and Dorsey lucked into the best RB in the NFL.  But in his most heinous decision, Dorsey chose Kitchens over Gregg Williams (and Bruce Arians) and in retrospect it appears to be same level of thoughtlessness as when Jimmy shows up in the draft room and says he wants a pass rusher (and we get Bark Mingo at 6 overall) or when Johnny Manziel’s wreck this league text lands him here.  Hey buddy boy:  cut your losses on Kitchens and save this season.

Cheddar 2019 week 9… (welcome back to jk.com)

Week nine business goes in this thread.

Mother of god I think I should dump the whole webhosting domain business because to paraphrase Tarantino dead website storage is not my business.  So you know, all was well when I left for my 3-to-close shift at the casino.  Hell, all was awesome since my 24 point dog essay pick was busy winning outright and my all-play was covering their two touchdowns.  Then the emails started.  Then I got home at 130am and logged into bluehost under the ‘your sites’ section and found only the prototype ‘no-nonsense.training.com’ site that I was roughing out for hometeam.  603brown is just gone.  So it’s not like I can even reboot it or anything like that.  So fortunately I remembered this old reliable and let’s just use it for now.

PD: Paying the price for arrogance and ideology.

The draft of this post had been sitting in this wordpress account for roughly four years.  Reading of ESPN’s unprecedented loss of 600K subscribers in November 2016 as well as the NFL ratings drop, I was reminded of the lessons that were unlearned by the Plain Dealer.   So here’s that germ of a topic that never became a full-on post.

It’s sad to see people lose their jobs.  It sad when an icon of my home town is diminished.  But it’s worth remembering that a means to mitigate this problem was known as early as six plus years ago.

Linked above is a Regina Brett column with the results of her question:  what do you want in the Plain Dealer?

You spoke so loudly I can’t hear out of my right ear. More than 500 readers have responded so far. The most common complaint? The paper leans left.

That ear-bending was received by the PD in 2006.  Did anything change at the PD?

I don’t subscribe to the PD and I don’t know their day-to-day coverage.  I do know that prior to that article the Editorial Board wanted to endorse John Kerry (and was overruled by the publisher resulting in a peculiar, no endorsement in 2004).  In 2008 and 2012 the paper endorsed Obama.  That’s all I’ve got to go on but if a paper endorsed Obama in 2012, it’s lefty.

The problem with this lies in the resulting business model.  People tend not to pay to be alienated.

*********

I stopped there because … because I was a sports blog and much of my readership would have been alienated by following this through to its logical conclusion.  The conclusion being:  Republicans buy newspapers too.  Stop telling your customers that they suck and need to change.

It’s a lesson that ESPN could stand to learn.

The NFL’s problem is more nuanced in that they’re not outright telling me I suck, but with the never-ending marketing geared toward ’emerging demographics’ and women (i.e., not me) it’s clear that I don’t matter.  Breast cancer ‘awareness’ month and video-game uniforms may get you a bump among feminists and fedora-wearers but for those of us who just like football, it doesn’t go unnoticed that we’re low in your prioritization hierarchy.

I’ll wrap this up with another case study.

schumer-rogen.jpgThe education of Bud Light

Bud Light learned this lesson the hard way with it’s recent sacking of the gross Seth Rogen/Amy Schumer ad campaign.  Turns out Bud Light had a mid-single-digit volume decrease in volume since it began.  Speaking for guys like me who comprise the vast majority of your purchasing — albeit not target — market:  why the hell would I buy beer from people who literally hate me?  Oh that’s right:  I’m a 50 year old white guy and I’ll be dead soon.  Thanks for reminding me Bud Light, message received.  Good luck selling your rice-syrup based, enzyme-laden lager to dudes who put oranges in their beer.

Anyway, good to see that your bi-coastal ad agencies have gotten pulse on the market and are all about honchoing a campaign to go after that half of America that seems to be ready to MAGA.

Or not.
